Right now, somewhere in your house, a video call is freezing, a smart TV is buffering, or a work upload is crawling — and you’re probably blaming your Wi-Fi router. It’s usually not the router. It’s the connection coming into your home in the first place, and in 2024 the U.S. government quietly rewrote the rules on what even counts as “fast enough.”

The Federal Communications Commission raised its official broadband threshold from 25 Mbps download / 3 Mbps upload — a standard that had stood since 2015 — to 100 Mbps download / 20 Mbps upload. That’s a 400% jump on downloads and a 600% jump on uploads. Millions of households are still on plans built for the old standard, paying for something the government no longer classifies as broadband at all.

Home internet connections fall into five main categories — fiber, cable, DSL, fixed wireless, and satellite — and the right one depends on what’s physically available at your address, not just what’s cheapest. Fiber delivers the fastest, most symmetrical speeds where it’s installed; cable is the most widely available high-speed option; DSL and satellite serve as fallbacks in areas with limited infrastructure; and fixed wireless (including 5G home internet) has emerged as a legitimate fourth option in the last two years.

What “Broadband” Actually Means Now

The FCC’s 100/20 Mbps standard, adopted in March 2024, wasn’t arbitrary. It followed a 2021 congressional directive in the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act that defined any household below 25/3 Mbps as “unserved” and anything below 100/20 Mbps as “underserved.” According to the FCC’s own deployment data, roughly 24 million Americans — about 7% of the country — still lack access to a fixed connection meeting the new benchmark. In rural areas, that figure climbs to nearly a quarter of the population, and it’s even higher on tribal lands.

The agency also set a long-term aspirational target of 1 Gbps download / 500 Mbps upload, though no timeline exists for making that the enforced minimum.

The Five Ways Internet Actually Reaches Your House

Fiber-Optic: The Gigabit Standard-Bearer

Fiber sends data as pulses of light through glass or plastic strands instead of electrical signals through copper. That’s why it delivers the fastest, most reliable connections available to consumers, with symmetrical upload and download speeds — a genuine advantage for anyone who streams, hosts video calls, or backs up large files to the cloud.

The catch is availability. Fiber requires new physical infrastructure, and providers have historically prioritized dense urban and suburban areas over rural buildouts. If it’s installed at your address, it’s almost always the best option. If it isn’t, no amount of shopping around will get it to you faster than the provider’s own construction timeline.

Cable: The Default for Most of America

Cable internet piggybacks on the same coaxial infrastructure used for cable TV, which is why it’s the most widely deployed high-speed option in the U.S. Speeds typically range from 100 Mbps to over 1 Gbps download, though upload speeds lag well behind fiber — often capped between 10 and 50 Mbps — because of how the underlying DOCSIS technology allocates bandwidth.

Cable’s biggest practical downside is shared bandwidth: because neighbors on the same node draw from a common pool of capacity, speeds can dip during peak evening hours in densely populated areas.

DSL: The Aging Fallback

Digital Subscriber Line runs over traditional copper telephone wiring, making it available almost anywhere a landline once reached. It’s also the slowest of the wired options, with speeds that degrade the farther a household sits from the provider’s central office — sometimes dropping well below the new 100/20 Mbps threshold entirely.

DSL persists mainly in rural and older suburban areas where cable and fiber build-outs haven’t arrived. For basic browsing and email, it’s usable; for multi-device streaming households, it usually isn’t.

Fixed Wireless and 5G Home Internet: The New Contender

Fixed wireless access (FWA) uses cellular towers to beam a signal to a receiver mounted on or inside your home, and it has moved from a rural stopgap to a mainstream option since major carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon began aggressively marketing 5G home internet plans. It requires no cable dug into the ground, which makes it dramatically faster to deploy than fiber or cable.

Performance varies more than wired options because it depends on tower proximity, network congestion, and even weather. Still, it’s helping close the rural coverage gap: the FCC noted mobile 5G service is now reaching many households that fixed broadband still can’t.

Satellite: The Last Resort That’s Gotten Better

Traditional satellite internet (like older HughesNet and Viasat services) suffers from high latency because signals travel roughly 22,000 miles to a geostationary satellite and back. Low-earth-orbit services like Starlink have cut that latency dramatically by using satellites much closer to Earth, making satellite internet viable for video calls and gaming for the first time. It remains the most expensive option per Mbps and is generally a last resort for locations no other technology reaches.
